Canada and the World I.

The course will be devoted to novels and short
stories dealing with the influence of other countries on the social development of Canada. Immigrants of the postwar years after World War I and II (Hungarians, Austrians), the Mennonites, Jewish immigrants finding their home in Canada are topic of this course. Obligatory novels are: Henry Kreisel's (1922- ) The Betrayal (1964), John Marlyn's (1912- ) Under the Ribs of Death (1957), Rudy Weiber's (1943- ) The Blue Mountains of China (1970), Peace Shall Destroy Many (1962) and Adele Wiseman's (1928-1992) The Sacrifice (1955), and short stories of Morley Callaghan, Alice Munro, Mavis Gallant, and Robertson Davies.
Participants are requested to actively take part in the discussions, to make one oral presentation on at least one novel / short story and to write one home assignment (6-8 pages) of his/her choice on the basic of a list of essay topics.
