Country report - Slovakia

 

In the Summer Term of 2000/01 the Canadian Studies Centre of Comenius University

Bratislava offered two courses on Canadian literature (Canadian Short Story

given by M. Gazdik, M.A; Contemporary Canadian Novel given by M Huttova,

PhD) and a course on multiculturalism in Canada (Canada- Multiculturalism in

Practice given by university teachers and visiting lecturers form Germany

and B. Bystrica). 17 students signed up for the course on multiculturalism .

In March the Center hosted  Prof. Morris from the University of Saarbrucken

who gave two lectures on Canadian multiculturalism. We started a cooperation

with a new center of Canadian studies which was established at the

University of Matej Bell in Basnka Bystrica. Two lecturerers came from

B.Bystrica to give lectures in Bratislava.

In May the Center hosted the meeting of the editorial board of the Central

and European Canadian Studies Journal .

In June the Center participated in launching the Slovak translation of " The

Handmaid's Tale"(translated by M. Gazdik and with an afterword by M.Huttova)

 

In the winter term of 2001/02 there are two courses offered by the Center(A Historical

Survey of Canadian  literature and 20th Century Literature) There are 11

students attending the courses. In November the Center will host two

visiting lecturers from Canada: Prof David Staines, the Dean of Faculty of

Arts, University of Ottawa and Roman Mukherjee, a former government

official. M Gazdik a nd M Huttova are now working on a special issue of the

Slovak journal "Revue svetovej literatury"(The Review of Word Literature)

dedicated to Canadian Literature, which will come out next February.

 

The library has been extended by about 50 titles from two  Canadian

government book donations.
