Sculpture terms

alabaster marble-like stone, usually white gesso mixture of plaster of Paris or gypsum and glue, used as a base for basrelief or to prepare a painting surface
anaglyph carving or ornament in basrelief intaglio carving in which the design is cut into the surface, the opposite of relief
armature frame used to support clay, wax, or plaster in modeling
atlas, telamon male statue used as a column, as in an ancient Greek temple kore ancient Greek female statue, usually draped
banker sculptors workbench kouros ancient Greek male statue, usually nude
basrelief, basso-relievo, low relief sculpture in which the figures project only slightly from the background mantle clay mould around a wax model
calvary representation of the Crucifixion maquette, bozzetto preliminary model for a sculpture
cameo small basrelief carving in stone, glass, or shell, the design in relief being a different colour from the background mobile abstract construction with parts that move when pushed or blown
caryatid female statue used as a column, as in an ancient Greek temple pieta representation of Mary with the body of Jesus
putto, amorino figure of a small child or cherub
chryselephantine made or decorated with gold and ivory, as ancient Greek statues were relief, relievo sculpture in which the figures half project from a flat background
cire perdue, lost-wax process technique in bronze casting in which the wax layer between core and mould is melted away and replaced by bronze restrike impression taken from a sculptors mould at some time after the original edition
corbeil sculpture of a basket of fruit or flowers, used as an architectural ornament spall chip broken from a stone carving
diaglyph carving or ornament in intaglio stabile construction resembling a mobile in appearance, but partly stationary
