Department of Germanic, Nordic and Dutch Studies

The Department of Germanic and Nordic Studies offers students of the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University degree studies in German and Norwegian. Upon completion of studies in these fields, our graduates have achieved qualifications which are valid in the areas of academic research, teaching, translation and interpreting. It is also possible to study other Germanic languages at the faculty, namely Dutch and Swedish. These programmes may be study on a full-time or part-time basis. Study is basically two-subject and both German and Norwegian may be combined freely with other subjects taught at the Faculty.

After five years of study, the Final State Exams completes a student's study. Successful completion of study results in the awarding of the title of "magistr" [Master's]. Post-graduate study may follow and leads to the awarding of the academic title of Dr., Doctor of Philosophy.

During the course of their five-year study, students choose from a wide range of optional lectures in addition to their required lectures and seminars. These optional courses may normally be taken beginning in the fifth semester of study, by which time the student has completed the basic lectures and seminars in the fields of literature and linguistics and has some concrete idea about the future direction of their study. At this time, the First Cycle of study is completed by sitting the Comprehensive Exam.

Lectures and seminars are carried out in the relevant language. In addition, the final written work, which the student presents and defends before admission to the Final State Exam, is also executed in the relevant foreign language. Because this is the study of the linguistics, history and literature of foreign languages, there is also the possibility for students to study abroad at other universities and institutions, especially in Germany, Austria and in the Scandinavian countries. Lecturers from Germany and Austria also teach in the department, and visiting professors are often present for shorter periods of time, during which they lecture on a variety of subjects.

The research activities of the Department also have their influence on teaching activities, especially in the preparation of diploma and doctoral theses. In the field of linguistics, interest is often focused on the oldest German texts, both literary and non-literary, which have been preserved in our country. Over the years this has resulted in large numbers of monographs and academic articles, published both at home and abroad. A great deal of attention has also been focused on a contrastive approach, comparing German and Czech. Results from this field is contained in the work of teachers and students in the Department (see the selection of publications by individual department members) and this subject has also been the focus of several conferences organised by the Department. In the area of literature, research has focused on contemporary German literature written in Bohemia and Moravia, German-Czech literary relations and the comparison of German and Scandinavian literatures. The Department has organised a number of international conferences dealing with the latter theme.

In recent years, as a result of increased interest in the study of Germanic languages, the number of both students and teachers, including foreign lecturers, in the Department has increased. The number of students currently in the Department is between 250 and 300.
