Brno Studies in English (BSE) is an open, peer reviewed international journal publishing articles from the fields of English and American studies.

Ever since its establishment in 1959, Brno Studies in English has been among the leading linguistics journals in Central Europe.

Aims and scope

The journal publishes original research in English studies, namely linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies, and translation. The journal is open to submissions from scholars all over the world. Please note that the preferred papers should deal with issues related to English language and Anglophone contexts, i.e. the journal does not, for instance, normally publish papers in general linguistics and on non-Anglophone literatures.

Abstracting and indexing

The journal is indexed in numerous international databases (including Scopus, ERIH+, MLA Bibliography, ABELL, CSA Language Behaviour Abstracts, Academic Search Premier, Linguistic Bibliography, SJR SCImago Journal & Country, C.I.R.C., EBSCO, DOAJ) as well as in the Czech database of reviewed periodicals (“Seznam”).

Digital archiving

Digital archiving policy: All issues are available in the Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University at https://digilib.phil.muni.cz/handle/11222.digilib/105047.

Review process

The journal operates double blind peer review policy. Suitable reviewers are selected by the editorial board to assure that no conflict of interest occurs. After acceptance of the final version, each paper is usually published in its pre-print version among “Articles in Press”, awaiting the completion of the current issue. More…

Publication ethics

All papers are screened for plagiarism by the editors. The journal accepts only original research papers that are currently not submitted for consideration elsewhere. Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication is not supported. More…

The journal is fully funded by the Department of English and American Studies and the Faculty of Arts. Journal history

The journal was founded in 1959 under the title of Brno Studies in English (abbreviated as BSE).

  • Since 1979, it was published within the series Sborník prací filozofické fakulty brněnské university (abbreviated as SPFFBU; the Latin name Studia minora Facultatis philosophicae Universitatis masarykianae is also used by the publisher, i.e. the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University). Hence the occasional citations equating the two titles, such as SPFFBU S 8 = BSE 28, 2002, etc.
    • From 1979 until 1994, the journal was published within the “K” series of SPFFBU (“germanisticko-anglistická řada/series germanica et anglica”; e.g. the 1979 volume was identified as SPFFBU K 1 = Brno Studies in English 13).
    • From 1995 to 2008, the journal was published separately within the “S” series of SBFFBU (“anglistická řada/series anglica”; e.g. the 1995 volume was identified as SPFFBU S 1 = Brno Studies in English 21).
  • Since 2009, the journal has been publishing two issues per year, under the sole title of Brno Studies in English.
