Creative Writing Contest 2011
Dear writers,
the heat is on, once again. Here comes the long-awaited second year of the
Creative Writing Contest
organized by The Department of English and American Studies and Escape - English Students’ Club! While the contest does not exactly measure up to something like the Pulitzer Prize (not yet, anyway), winning it will give you the respect you have always strived for, as well as an impulse to go on with your writing career.
This year's contest brings in a number of changes:
1. “Teachers” as a new participant category. Pit your skills against those who can bore you to death with a lecture on James Joyce. Writing is a game, they can talk about it; well, can they play it?
2. Prizes now include the “Absolute winner” category. Out of all the submissions in all categories, one writer will be elected the absolute winner of this year's contest.
3. Members of the jury will be asked to provide short written feedback on each work, which will later be published online together with your submissions. This will provide invaluable help to everybody who wants their work assessed by an independent body.
4. The period for accepting submissions has been extended to four months.
The rules of the contest:
1. The contest is open to ALL students and teachers at the Faculty of Arts.
2. Members of the organizing team or members of the jury may not participate in the contest.
3. There are two participant categories – students and teachers. “Students” include all B.A and M.A. students in all study programs, including exchange students currently at the faculty. “Teachers” include all members of the teaching staff, as well as all doctoral students and guest lecturers currently at the faculty.
4. Submissions must be in English, sent by email to creative.kaa@gmail.com as attachments in the .doc or .rtf formats. Other languages or formats will not be accepted. The attachment must be anonymous. In the text of your e-mail, we ask you to include your name, your participant category and your genre category. Also, please state whether you want your name published with your work online.
5. There are two genre categories – poetry and short prose. For poetry, the maximum length is five short or mid-sized poems. For short prose, the maximum length is ten pages (Times New Roman 12pts, spacing 1.5).
6. A contestant may make one submission in each genre category. Re-submissions (corrected or amended versions of your work) will be ignored.
7. You may not participate in the contest with works that have previously been published, or those that have been sent to other competitions.
8. The organizers of the contest reserve the right to publish the winning pieces (together with the authors' names) in various materials, both electronic and printed, in the months and years following the contest.
The deadline for submissions is 29 February 2012. Your submissions will be presented as anonymous pieces to the jury. Each member of the jury will assess your work independently on a scale from 1 to 20, as well as providing short written feedback. Your final score will be an average of all the scores supplied by the jurors.
The winners of the contest will be announced at the Creativity Night in May 2012. Full online announcement will be made by ESCape members in the days following the Creativity Night – in Elf, on Facebook, on the KAA website, on the department notice board and in the ESCape bulletin. The winning pieces will be disseminated amongst the academic crowd and the winners' physical presence will be greeted with quiet sighs of admiration and grunts of approval. All submissions (with or without the authors' names) will be made available in the Creative Writing Contest 2011 course in Elf (open to all members of the Faculty of Arts).
There will be three prizes for each genre category in each participant category, and one Absolute Winner prize. This makes a total of 13 prizes, awarded as follows:
