LTE Incorporating Corpora into English Language Teaching

This course refocuses the knowledge students have about linguistics on its practical applications for the teaching of English as a foreign language. In recent years, and in particular with the advent of language corpora, new views have emerged on what language per se is, on the structure of communicative events, on the interdependence of grammar and lexis, on the pervasiveness of collocation, on the nature of right and wrong, on the role of English in the world today and its infinite variety. These new views derive from new evidence and deserve new consideration. The course is also referred to as Task Based Linguistics, which reflects the participatory and discovery activity that is required of students in making their own discoveries and drawing their own conclusions. The aim therefore is to lead students to a contemporary view of language that is compatible with their teaching of it.

Language Acquisition

Autumn  (from 2011, Autumn only)

Day studies UZAJ2022

Combined studies UZAJ5032

After a knowledge of language per se, the second foundation needed by language education professionals is an understanding of how language is learnt and acquired. This field of study is known as Language Acquisition. In this one semester course, trainees delve into various aspects of this field through extensive reading, conducting experiments and analysing findings, and by reflecting on their own experiences as learners and teachers.

Combined studies ELF. This course, entitled Scenarios, is conducted entirely online.
This course complements the work done in the previous courses and the concurrent practice teaching. It deals primarily with holistic/macro aspects of language teaching such as the use of ICT, testing, task-based learning, learner autonomy and course design. Time and space are also granted to a range of procedures for teaching aspects of specific skills. Although the day studies and combined studies courses have completely different formats and modes of teaching, the content is essentially the same.

Practice Teaching and School Placement

Internal practice teaching: (Autumn)

Day students UZAJ2037

Combined studies UZAJ5047

ELF

In this course, the students are trainee teachers. They teach the weekly course AJ91010 whose students are elementary learners of English studying other subjects at Masaryk University. The trainees deal with a wide range of issues, applying theoretical knowledge of language, language acquisition and practical methodology to lesson planning and teaching. The planning involves groups for team teaching as the students become aware of their students' strengths and weakness and meet the course requirement to cover the four skills and systems, to use a variety of resources and modes of teaching. After the teaching, trainees reflect on their work and that of their colleagues in feedback sessions run by the trainers.

External practice teaching:(Spring usually)

Day students UZAJ2048

Combined studies UZAJ5048

ELF

School placement provides trainees with guided experience in schools. Although the trainees are often already teaching, the opportunity to work under more experienced teachers and to examine their own practices is intended to lead to a greater awareness of the art of teaching English. The Practice must be undertaken in an accredited Czech secondary school.

Writing Book Reviews

This is not a course taught as such. Rather this course in  ELF provides information and resources for the task of writing book reviews which is required in some of the methodology courses.

ICT for ELT

UZAJ9514

ELF

The aim of this course is to acquaint future teachers of English with some aspects of using computers in ELT. In the worlds of Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing, most software is available through the browser. The coures deals with using the resources available for language teaching purposes. This includes materials created specifically for ELT, Google tools that have ELT application, Moodle tools for blended learning and a wide range of things that are simply out there waiting to be used for language education. In addition, students are required to consider the use of these resources and materials in the light of their views on language acquisition and language per se.
