The monography deals with a new aspect of literacy in more developed countries, so called functional literacy, which means competence of the individual to function in contemporary complex world full of symbols and information. It is based on data from International adult literacy (IALS) carried out in twenty countries, the Czech Republic included. The book presents international comparisons, as well as disscusions on causes and consecvences of functional literacy.
