1.     Why study in  Samara?

(you might want to consider the order of this list since it lists so many qualities)

•    Samara is one of the oldest cities on the Volga, founded in 1586.

•   Samara is an important centre of education .  20 state and non-state universities and academies offer higher education and numersous colleges provide secondary (advanced) education .

•   Samara, known as Kyubyshev, 1936-1990,  is a large industrial, scientific and cultural center , which  was actually closed  to foreign visitors until 1991, as many military-industrial  enterprises aerospace and electronic industry) are situated here.

•    Samara is an important  transport centre.  It has an international airport, railway station, river port.

•     Samara is  a picturesque place for a holiday, as it is situated on the bank of the Volga. There are a lot of comfortable pensions and holiday centres in Samara and  the surrounding area.   The Volga offers the opportunity for a 12 hour trip along the river, or an exciting cruise to Astrakhan, Moscow  or St. Petersburg.

•   Samara region  ranks second in terms of economic development  amongst  Russia’s regions. There is  a large volume of foreign investment;  companies such as as Nestlι, Coca-Cola, Pepsico, McDonald’s and others are represented . Lately  Jacques Chirac, President of France, Al Gore, Vice-president of the USA, Roman Herzog, President of  the Federal Republic of Germany , and ambassadors of many other  countries  have visited Samara. 

•   Samara is an important cultural centre. There are four theaters, a Philharmonic,  several museums, cinemas, night clubs, stadiums. Plus sports  centres, fitness clubs, and other athletic facilities.

•   Samara is significant in terms of its history. . The writer A. Tolstoy, was born hereand I. Repin, a famous Russian artist, painted  here.

•   During World War II the government and diplomatic corps were evacuated to Samara.  You can now visit  Stalin’s famous bunker , situated more than 30 meters underground, which now operates as a museum. The astronaut, Yuri Gagarin spent his first days in Samara after his  flight into space. 

•    Samara is a much safer city than Moscow or St. Petersburg. Moreover the prices   of many goods are considerably lower than in these  cities. Samara offers a range of shopping facilities (supermarkets, shopping centres, and markets)where you can buy practically everything.

•      The climate is relatively mild in Samara, when compared to the rest of the country. The average summer temperature  is +25ocand in winter it is  - 10 oC.

•    Samara has always been a multinational and multiconfessional city. Citizens of Samara are known for their national and religious tolerance. There are not only Orthodox churches, but also the biggest mosque in Russia, a Catholic cathedral, an Evangelical church and a synagogue in Samara. 

 

2. Your studies at Samara Academy of Humanities begin with  a Russian language course, taught by the Academy’s skilled tutors .

 

SAH provides the following Russian courses:

 

1)      8-month course suitable for beginners, to prepare them for study in educational establishments of Samara. This course includes:

•     acquisition of the background knowledge of Russian pronunciation, intonation and writing;

•     acquisition of the language in daily use (about 1500-2000 words and word combinations)

•     learning of basic grammar forms and syntactic models, which are used in daily speech;

•     developing  comprehension skills;

•     acquisition of  basic language skills in professional speech;

 

The curriculum supposes 25-30 academic hours of classes a week. Having completed the course, the students can continue their studies at one of the colleges or higher educational establishments (universities or academies).

 

 Course fees — $1850.

Accommodation  ( student hostel) - $20 a month.

Accommodation  ( private flat) – $150 a month.

 

2)      6-month course suitable for students, possessing a basic knowledge of Russian.  This course  is aimed at students studying Russian, or those who are  professionally bound to Russia. The course provides:

•     acquisition of lexical items and grammar structures, used in business and professional communications and newspaper articles;

•     learning to summarize texts, carry out business correspondence, and speak over the telephone in Russian.

 

The curriculum supposes 10 academic hours of classes a week.

 

 Course fees - $ 300 per month

Accommodation  ( student hostel) - $20 a month.

Accommodation  ( private flat) – $150 a month.

 

3)      3-week summer course, combining study of Russian and  excursion programme.

 

This course is provided for beginners and  for those students who have a basic knowledge of Russian grammar and spoken language skills and for teachers of Russian abroad.

 

The course curriculum envisages:

•    grammar and pronunciation course;

•     a focus on developing spoken Russian;

•    reading and text analysis;

•    video lessons (film watching);

•  Tuition can be customised according to students’ needs: tutors can offer lectures or tutorials on a range of subjects includingtheoretical Russian grammar,  comparative grammar of  Slavic languages and history of Russian culture.

 

The curriculum envisages 20 academic hours of classes a week.

The course costs $ 530.

Course fees include tuition, accommodation in a pension, 3 meals a day are included. The costs of excursions are additional.

 In accordance with students’ wishes, students can be met in Moscow and a sightseeing tour can be  arranged.

This course can take place either in Samara or in a location outside the cityor on board a ship during the Volga cruise.

5.      How to get to Samara?

  1. Via Moscow. It takes approximately  one hour to get from Moscow to Samara by plane, or about 16 hours by train.
  2. Via Frankfurt-am-Main (Germany). “Lufthansa” airline has regular flights Frankfurt-Samara. The flight lasts about  fourhours.
