GAČR Announcement: Tenders for the Year 2027

The Czech Science Foundation (GACR) is announcing calls for Project Proposals for Standard and International Projects, POSTDOC INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP, and Restart Grants. The deadline for submissions is 31 March 2026. The EXPRO and JUNIOR STAR tenders will be announced in early March due to a transition to a new information system.

Project proposals with a project start date in 2027 can now be submitted until 31 March 2026. The results of the competitions will be announced on 26 November 2026. For international competitions and calls, the results will be published later, depending on the agreement with the respective foreign agency. GRIS is used for submitting proposals in the currently open calls, while for the Junior Star and EXPRO competitions, GAČR is preparing a change in the form of a new information system. The EXPRO and Junior Star competitions, intended for excellent researchers, will be announced at the beginning of March.

The announced calls cover a wide range of grant schemes – from standard three‑year projects and international collaborations to individual support for postdoctoral researchers and grants designed for returning to a scientific career. You can follow currently announced calls on the GAČR website HERE.

The evaluation process takes place in several stages and includes reviews by international experts, ensuring a high‑quality and transparent selection procedure. No project is funded without international assessment.

At the same time, attention should be drawn to the already announced changes in the limits for submitting proposals. For competitions with a project start date in 2027, significant adjustments have been introduced – each applicant or co‑applicant may submit only one project proposal in each of the following categories:

  • Standard Projects, International Projects and LA Grants
  • JUNIOR STAR and EXPRO
  • POSTDOC INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP and Return Grants

In addition, one person may act as a principal investigator or co‑investigator in only one project starting in 2027. The aim of these new rules is to allow broader participation of the research community and to support as many high‑quality proposals as possible, given GAČR’s long‑term limited financial resources.

Recommendations for Academics at the Faculty of Arts

Given the significant rule changes and the large number of simultaneously announced competitions, we recommend that applicants:

  • start preparing their project proposals as early as possible,
  • contact the FF MU Project support team in due time - email: gacr@phil.muni.cz,
  • keep track of participation limits within each category.

Proposals are prepared in the GRIS application - please assign access rights for the Project Support Department - username MUNI.ARTS. Proposals must also be registered in ISEP - Project Proposal Editor.

Detailed documentation for all competitions, including tender documentation and forms, is available on the official GAČR website
and in IS: Dokumentový server FF.

GAČR Announced Competitions

Standard Projects – the largest and most frequently used GAČR scheme, supporting excellent basic research across all disciplines. Projects usually last three years and are open to researchers regardless of career length.

International Projects – support for joint research activities with partners from foreign grant agencies. The results of these calls may be announced later, depending on agreements with partner institutions.

POSTDOC INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP (PIF) – a competition for researchers who completed their Ph.D. within the last four years. It offers two variants: OUTGOING (a two‑year stay at a prestigious foreign institution + one year in the Czech Republic) and INCOMING (return to the Czech Republic or the start of a foreign researcher’s career at a Czech institution).

Return Grants – support for researchers returning to their scientific careers after a career break, especially due to childcare or caring for a close person.

At the beginning of March, GAČR also plans to announce competitions focused on excellent research, for which a new information system is being prepared:

EXPRO – five‑year projects with the ambition of delivering groundbreaking scientific results, intended for experienced researchers.

JUNIOR STAR – prestigious support for excellent early‑career researchers within eight years of obtaining their Ph.D., who have strong international experience and publish in leading international journals.
