Morality, Culture, and the Expansion of Fairness: A Cross-Cultural Study

In this talk, Purzycki will present some recent findings from a large cross-cultural study (8 field sites) on the role culture plays on cooperation. He will first briefly discuss the universals and particulars of individuals' and groups' mental models of what it means to be good and bad. Then, by weaving together this ethnographic data with economic experiments measuring honest behavior, he shows that while mental models of morality may vary cross-culturally, valuing honesty indeed has an effect on honest behavior both within and across cultures.
