Michaela Kovářová – Divided by Nacionalism, United by Culture: Between the Church and Stele in Odzun
-
20 March 2025
7:00 PM – 8:00 PM - Hans Belting Library, Veveří 28, Brno
We kindly invite you to another lecture from the series StředověC JinaX, this time with Michaela Kovářová. Come on March 20 at 19:00 to listen to her reflections on the ongoing dispute over the historical ownership of the church in the Armenian village of Odzun.
In the very heart of the village of Odzun, located in the northeast of present-day Armenia, there is a church adorned with various reliefs and surrounded by an outdoor stone gallery. Additionally, an unusual monument stands beside the church itself. This monument features, among other things, two stelae with carved ornaments, figures, and scenes. The ongoing dispute among the various states of the Caucasus regarding which monument historically belongs to which country can be partly observed in the case of Odzun. But how can the monuments in Odzun illustrate that even in the past this issue was not clear-cut? And can the reliefs on the church and the monument assist us in specifying their dating, which remains uncertain?
The lecture will again be streamed online on our YouTube channel. The lecture is part of the Contexts of Humanity project of energeia o.p.s.
