Northern Oman, Al-Hajar Mountains. A place where karst depressions filled with water ensured the survival of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula during periods of drought. This is where the newly supported project of Inna Mateiciucová from the Department of Classical Studies at the Faculty of Arts, MU is turning its attention.
From the perspective of contemporary archaeology, the original karst depressions in northern Oman serve as environmental and archaeological archives of inestimable importance. The sediments that have filled many of these depressions over time contain numerous stone artefacts. Their discovery and subsequent detailed analysis, including dating, will help shed light on questions concerning the settlement of the Arabian Peninsula by human populations from Africa.
In addition to the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR), the three-year project will be funded by the German agency DFG, which will also serve as the evaluating institution. GA ČR will thus newly support seven projects from the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University, which will be launched this year.
