| Description | The Order of the Knights of St. John came on a Rhodes in 1309 after the fall of the Holy Land (1291). They defended the domain from the emirates of Asia Minor and later from the Ottoman Empire. After conquering Constantinople the Ottomans twice attempted to seize Rhodes; the upgraded fortification in 1480 withstood and consequently there was another modernization. Even the reinforcement of the walls, onlarge of moats, the tenaillons and construction of the polygonal boulevards at key points did not prevent from a surrender in 1522, followed by the departure of the Order. |
