Description Fortifications on the Kos bear witness to tumultuos events that the island went trough between the Byzantium and the Turkish invasion. The Order of St. John used the original stronghold in Pyli and built three others: the fortified settlement of Antimacheia, the town and castle of Kos and the Kefalos castle. However, even reinforcement of the fortifications did not prevent the anexation of the island by the Ottoman Empire in 1523.
