Keywords experiment in medical science; controversy over vivisection in England and Czech lands
Description The paper deals with discussions which were connected to the expansion of the experimental method in medical science and which took place during the last quarter of 19th century and early 20th century. The author pursues the character and development of the discussions in England and the Czech lands and argues that external factors such as the position of scientists in society, the requirement for the freedom of healing, or the issue of criminal liability of physicians had a decisive influence on the persuasiveness of the arguments put forward by each party in the controversy. On the basis of an analysis of the debate in the Czech lands at the beginning of the 20th century, she shows that the core of the dispute was no longer the question of which value permitted or prohibited a certain type of behaviour or action, but whether the given value could establish a generally valid norm.
