Description From the existence of negative linguistic attitudes of Canarian speakers towards their own variety, the present investigation brings new data concerning the phonetic variation on the Canary Television (Televisión Canaria) news, focusing on the excess of standard Spanish sounds [s]. The study is based on the fact that the negative linguistic attitudes and linguistic insecurity are perceptible in the media in those speakers whose function is directly related to the linguistic market. To prove this hypothesis four phonemes of the Spanish language and their phonetic realizations are analyzed in the speech of the presenters, reporters and interviewees in five news programs of Canary Television. Given the differences among the three groups of speakers, we emphasize the importance of linguistic capital, the existence of linguistic market in given profession and lingüistic adquisition that is strongly related to existing linguistic attitudes en the region.
