Description The United States rank first in many categories, but being the world leader in the number of incarcerated people is hardly a title to be proud of. Why are American prisons so full and why does the country keep building new ones? What are the historical causes of a continual increase in the American incarcerated population? And why is this population predominantly African American, Hispanic, and includes an increasing number of women? The lecture provides an overview of historic moments in the development of the prison-industrial complex in the United States. It highlights how harsh anti-drug policies and racism have led to the disintegration of ethnic and economic minorities and marginalized communities. The last part of the lecture analyzes the effects of the burgeoning justice and carceral system on the general development of American society and its economy.
