| Description | The lecture presents the development of Czech private letters during the 20th century. It is based on corpus processing of vast material gathered in the archive of private correspondence at the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. The lecture is focused on changes of epistolary etiquette, on dynamism of vocabulary and on grammatical means of expression used in private correspondence, on relation of spoken vs. written language and on changes in perception of the dichotomy “spoken” vs. “written”. Authentic letters are compared with the development of requirements relating to epistolary etiquette as presented in school textbooks of Czech of the particular period. The contribution is supplemented with examples of correspondence materials. |
