Description The teacher of Italian L2 in multilingual classes is confronted with the problem of the coexistence of learners with different languages, also typologically very distant from Italian, of which the teacher cannot have competence. This poses two kinds of challenges: a) to recover competences in the learners' L1 that can facilitate the learning process in the L2; b) to experiment ways to develop a metalinguistic reflection that leads to recover the common core of shared knowledge linked to the notional categories that are at the basis of the functional and formal differentiations of the grammatical system being learnt. One of the central tasks of the school can be precisely that of integrating, enhancing and favouring the process of spontaneous language acquisition through paths of linguistic reflection that also pass through processes of conscious comparison between L1 and L2.
