Description Sicilian has a directive construction formed by the second person singular of the imperative of iri ‘to go’ and the second person, singular or plural, of the imperative of a lexical verb (va pigghilu, let. ‘va prendilo’). Based on studies that have investi- gated the development of directive markers in different languages from a historical- pragmatic perspective, the construction is interpreted as the result of a grammatical- isation process that originates in the dyadic interaction between the participants of the speech act, triggered by the specific deictic features of the verb (departure from the speaker’s point of view); since the speaker’s point of view is included in the de- scription of the event, the interpretation of this is therefore subjectified. The analysis is carried out on a corpus of Sicilian made of the ethnotexts and the induced speech of the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS). Moreover, the results of the survey on pres- ent-day Sicilian are compared with data from texts dating back to different periods of the language.
