Description The main inquiry of this contribution was the phenomenon of „centrality“, i. e the principle of central symmetry often observed not only within the architectural production of Late Antiquity or Early Christian architecture. We believe it is the „geometric purity“ of the centrally symmetrical spaces and their undeniable aesthetic potential that certainly count among reasons for their broad and repeated use, but above all, their "power". The undeniable prominence and the „spotlight“ character of the very middle of a centrally shaped baptismal building will thus serve us as a ground for the reconsideration of the nature of the association of baptismal architecture with mortuary and memorial symbolism.
