Description ‘Empty spaces’ within urban centres are deliberately not built up and are maintained as such for a prolonged period of time. The archaeological excavations of oppida - the fortified urbanized centres spanning the Late Iron Age to Early Roman transition - almost exclusively focus on the originally built-up areas. Projects studying the entire enclosed area as one urban space, and thus, also looking at the role and function of seemingly ‘empty’ areas, are rare.
