Description In the 21st century, within the field of Japanese language education, "communication" became one of the keywords and stimuli for practice and further development of JSL and Japanese langauge teaching (Noda 2005, 2021). However, in Eastern Europ, there is a lot of institutions conducting Japanese language education as a part of the 20th century philological tradition. This approach doesn't see Japanese language just as a mean of communication, but also as a tool for a japanolgical research. The present talk introduces Masaryk University and its Japanese Studies program as an example of such philological approach. First, a general background of Japanese language education in the Czech rep. is introduced and MU's program is situated within it. Next, three specific projects of the department are presented, namely Koryukai, TA program and Nihongogaku salon. Finaly, positive and negative effects of anti-Covid 19 measures are discussed.
