Description The author offers a new view of folk etymology of toponyms from the perspective of their naming motives. An analysis based on the relational model proved that names belonging to the C-type of the relational model are most often subject to the folk etymology, i.e. names expressing characteristics of named objects, as well as names belonging to the D-type of the relational model, i.e. names expressing possessivity and other relations to a person. An example of the C-type of the relational model: the name Nádavky formed on the basis of the verb nadati “to add”, i.e. “added pieces of land”, according to the folk etymology is a place where people were swearing at one another, cf. nadávky “swear words”; an example of the D-type of the relational model: the village name Radějov, formed from the anthroponym Raděj, according to the folk etymology is a place where bandits lived and discussed which places to rob (in Czech radili se, i.e. were discussing/arranging).
