| Description | My presentation tried to briefly explore the complex interplay between colonial administration, ecclesiastical authority, and indigenous agency all linked with the Spanish transoceanic missions — particularly through the lens of jurisdiction, administration, and conflict. I highlighted the role of Bohemian and Moravian missionaries, who are the main object of my research, with a focus on the Society of Jesus, and the cases of Father Joseph Neumann and Ignacius Xavier Keller, two Jesuits from the Province of Bohemia active in the missions of northern New Spain. I presented and explained the main points of my research, where I scrutinize the role of Bohemian missionaries on the frontier of the Spanish Empire in the Early Modern Period, taking into consideration mainly the administrative body of the Empire, which, after all, was the everyday reality for these men. Finally, I proposed questions relevant for my research, concerning the authority and power of a Jesuit missionary, and interaction of a Jesuit missionary with other parts of society. |
