Description The article analyzes the frequency of selected proper names in texts from corpora mainly of a media nature. According to data from the Czech National Corpus, the formal forms of the proper names Jiří, Jan, Ivan and Petr are most often used in journalism and fiction. In contrast, the hypocoristics Jiřík, Honza and Péťa are very common in colloquial speech, fiction, and sometimes in journalism. Some hypocoristics are very often associated with a certain fairy-tale character, such as the foolish Honza or Ivanushka the Fool. On the other hand, the formal forms of male proper names are often associated with biblical or historical figures, such as Saint Peter, Jan Hus, King Jiří of Poděbrady, Ivan the Terrible, etc.
