| Description | There is empirical evidence confirming that students learn through participation in classroom discourse. At the same time, research shows that there are significant differences in the level of student participation. This paper examines how individual students’ participation changes when teachers decide to shift the instructional format from whole-class interaction to group work. Data were collected through video recordings of the participation of 147 students from six sixth-grade primary school classes during literature lessons. The data were analyzed using statistical methods. The results suggest that implementing group work is one possible approach that teachers can use in an attempt to achieve a more equitable distribution of student participation in classroom discourse. |
