| Description | Medieval European travelogues about Asia are exceptional sources for understanding the European conceptualization of "religion" at that time. It was based on the model of Christianity founded on the concepts of lex, fides, and cultus, which it attempted to apply to Asian traditions. This experience revealed the inadequacy of the conceptual apparatus for grasping Asian "religion," as it simultaneously uncovered similarities and fundamental differences at various levels. As a result, it contributed to the wider acceptance of the term "religio" to denote a specific set of beliefs, rituals, and ways of life. |
