Description This lecture examined the evolution of Greek during the Byzantine era (5th–15th centuries). After outlining key phases of Byzantine history, it discussed the sociolinguistic diversity of Medieval Greek, shaped by the coexistence of high, middle, and vernacular registers. Furthermore, major linguistic developments were showed, including phonological shifts, extensive morphological restructuring with case syncretism and loss of the dative, and the rise of periphrastic constructions in the verbal system.
