| Description | The paper analysed how three newspapers from the western provinces of the Russian Empire in 1847—Tygodnik Petersburski, Kuryer Wileński, and Rigasche Zeitung— reported on civic associations and their relations to state authorities. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, it explores how editors balanced the need to comply with censorship restrictions on the one hand and the strive to inform and to shape local civic identities on the other. The findings reveal how press discourse shaped civic identity. |
