| Description | The Vienna Theses on Language Policy recommend that "offers, approaches, methods and teaching/learning materials‘ should ’take into account the diversity characteristics [...] of learners" (de Cillia et al. 2023, 30). Furthermore, the "diversity of migrant societies [...] must be reflected in the content of German language teaching [...]" (ibid., 28). ‘Social diversity’ refers, among other things, to ethnic and social background, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation and age. The aim is not least to make visible those who are at risk of remaining invisible in the dominant ‘majority society’ and to give them a ‘voice’. In this space, we will explore the question of the extent to which attempts to address the above-mentioned aspects of the Vienna Theses in teaching materials and course formats also touch on taboos, given that these are designed to keep things hidden and beyond discussion. The aim here is to explore scope for action together by taking a critical and reflective look at current teaching and learning materials, our self-image as teachers, and teaching itself.
