Description When addressing complex issues, contemporary science cannot rely on individual methods used in isolation. Complex challenges require analogically comprehensive research methods that work in synergy – in other words, an interdisciplinary approach. One such science is zooarchaeology, which explores the multifaceted relationship between humans and animals through a combination of natural sciences and humanities. This article introduces zooarchaeology within the context of hippology studies. It outlines the basic aspects of coexistence between people and horses, defines its developmental phases, and provides an overview of current zooarchaeological literature relevant to these subjects. Using the example of horse remains from medieval contexts found within the area of the current Moravian town of Brno, the study demonstrates the type, quantity, and quality of information that can be extracted from skeletal material recovered through archaeological methods. Finally, it discusses how data obtained via zooarchaeological methodologies can inform and enrich our understanding of the relationship between people and horses.
