| Description | This study focuses on the perception of social problems and civic engagement among young people aged 15–24 (Generation Z) in the Czech Republic. Through qualitative research based on 78 semi-structured interviews, it identifies key issues that concern young people: the environmental crisis, financial insecurity and housing crisis, distrust in political representation, societal polarization with unwillingness to engage in dialogue, and low mutual solidarity. Digital technologies and social media play a significant role, potentially amplifying problems through the spread of misinformation and negatively affecting young people's wellbeing. The study further examines forms of civic engagement among young people, which primarily include influencing their immediate social environment and participation in community projects. Findings show that engaged young people avoid national-level political participation due to perceiving politics as a competitive and unwelcoming environment, while they can better envision involvement in local politics. The study provides recommendations for the education system, including supporting open debate in schools, strengthening student wellbeing, developing civic competencies, and promoting engagement through school councils and community youth organizations. |
