| Description | This topic opens up a wide field of exploration, but attention has been focused on two leitmotifs: 1) In the tragic history of the 20th century, the power and might of fire became a metaphor for the desire for justice. "The tree struck by lightning burned for centuries": the idea behind the Hus monument by sculptor František Bílek from 1900–1901. Following Josef Čapek's appealing cycle Fire from 1938–1939, the urgency of the element is again addressed in sculptures and paintings responding to the sacrifice of Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc in January and February 1969. 2) The title On the Threshold of Fire refers to two paintings by Milivoj Husák from 2004–2005: an exceptionally consistent approach to the theme of the elements, and especially fire, is a constant in his work. |
