| Description | Chapter 7 (Přemyslid Vyšehrad: the royal residence “within earshot of the bugle”, by Lukáš Reitinger) presents a coherent and comprehensive review of ducal and royal Vyšehrad during the 10th to 13th centuries from the perspective of the latest findings in historiography and archaeology. In many respects, it takes a new approach to all the fundamental issues surrounding Vyšehrad that have typified research to date, particularly with regard to the changing functions of Vyšehrad, the relationship of the Přemyslids to this castle, its position in relation to Prague Castle and other contemporary Czech fortified centres, and the dating and circumstances of the establishment of the local chapter. The author emphasizes that in order to understand the role of Vyšehrad in Czech history it is useful to acknowledge the constant transformation of the functions and significance of this place, which took place in accordance with the dynamics of the major political and social changes and events of the time. |
