Description The report examines bird names in Russian and Czech from the perspective of the principle of nomination, studying more than 450 pairs of Russian-Czech equivalents of bird names. Separate consideration is given to correspondences and discrepancies in the generic and specific components of bird names. Particular attention is paid to motivational features in bird names. The motivational feature is most pronounced in the species component. Three main motivational features were identified: the bird's coloration, its habitat, and its physique. Additionally, five more features were analyzed: references to the seasons and weather conditions, to other bird species, to sound manifestations, to the method of obtaining food.
