| Description | This paper examines the officium defunctorum as one of the key components of a church musician’s duties, even though this repertoire appears only rarely in the oldest Moravian sources from the late Middle Ages. It is likely that the relevant portions of the gradual and antiphonary were, for practical reasons, separated into dedicated books, most of which have not been preserved. More detailed evidence is provided by the Novae agendae Olomoucensis Directorium chori (Brno 1695). A parallel study of archival sources enables a clearer understanding of the role and relationship between the Requiem Mass and the full office within the context of funeral rites and subsequent commemorations. The considerable scope and duration of these ceremonies outside the Mass itself further illuminate the central role of vernacular songs and of more elaborate musical forms in this sphere. |
