| Description | Chapter 3 deals with the connection between Vyšehrad and the preservation and active commemoration of the legendary origins of the Přemyslid dynasty. From the early Middle Ages, relics (shoes and a purse) belonging to the alleged founder of the dynasty, Přemysl the Ploughman, were stored at Vyšehrad, which apparently helped to legitimize the Přemyslid rule over Bohemia. The author shows that the myth of the origins of this dynasty was probably commemorated at Vyšehrad as early as the 10th century. He also hypothesizes that on the inside walls of the ancient rotunda of St. John the Evangelist, a building that later disappeared and has not yet been discovered, there may have been a painted cycle depicting the succession of Přemyslid rulers, which could have been the model for the famous frescoes showing a similar cycle in the rotunda of St. Catherine in Znojmo from the mid-12th century |
