Description When learning a foreign language, the desire to speak like a native speaker is almost universal, but satisfying it can be very difficult, if not impossible. In fact, a foreign accent will always be present to some extent, sometimes more and sometimes less. While we focus on mastering grammar and vocabulary during our studies, less importance is usually given to pronunciation and, above all, intonation. The latter, however, is a fundamental component of effective communication, with its own grammar that performs various functions within a linguistic system. Nevertheless, it remains understudied and is often assumed to be acquired intuitively. Its marginality is also demonstrated by the limited number of studies in second language acquisition research. The monograph L2 Spanish and Italian intonation by Andrea Pešková (2023) examines the melodic patterns produced by Czech and German native speakers learning Spanish and Italian as a second language (L2) and evaluates the intonation patterns of L2 interlanguages in different types of sentences. By focusing on these learners, the work fills a gap in research by providing the first comprehensive contrastive analysis of intonational meaning in Spanish, Italian, German and Czech.
