| Description | In connection with the lectures and seminars “The Development of Latin Script in a Nutshell I,” this session will introduce the main aspects of script development in the Early Modern period. The focus will be on the Neo-Gothic cursive script, in its two main variants: Czech and German. Greater attention will naturally be given to the second variant (German Kurrent), as it is the most frequently used form of handwritten script preserved in sources from the 16th–19th centuries. The introductory lecture will present the main developmental lines of Latin script after 1500, with an emphasis on continuity with the preceding medieval era. We will explore the stylistic transformations that script underwent during this period and how our modern school handwriting—and even the fonts commonly used in today’s text editors—emerged from it. In the seminar, participants will become familiar with the alphabets of the most important source types of script (especially Czech and German Neo-Gothic cursives) and will have the opportunity to read several authentic historical documents. And that’s not all: in practice, you will acquire the main skills needed to actively create texts in these historical scripts—by writing in Kurrent, the most frequently used type of script. |
