Description The bishop, whose first name Sales refers to the famous church teacher St. Francis of Sales, went down in history as a “bishop-builder”. He was instrumental in establishing the priestly seminary on Antonínská Street in Brno, financed the main altar of the Brno Cathedral from his own funds and also began its neo-Gothic reconstruction. During his episcopate, which lasted from 1882 to 1904, as the first Czech bishop in Brno, he initiated the establishment of a number of church associations and congregations, organized congresses of Czech Catholics, supported the education of poor children and linguistic equality. As Archbishop of Olomouc, he had the Archbishop’s Grammar School built in Kroměříž and the appearance of the Archbishop’s Palace in Olomouc modified. In 1911, 4 years before his death, he was created a cardinal.
