| Description | This monograph examines political communication between Holy Roman Emperors and the Gonzaga dynasty of Mantua at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries from various perspectives. Based on sources from Italian and other archives, it traces the development of mutual contacts, forms of diplomatic practice, and the specifics of written communication. In addition to specific findings regarding imperial-Gonzaga relations, the book seeks answers to general questions, such as the nature of imperial authority in northern Italy, the beginnings of modern diplomacy, and the perception of Central Europe by observers from beyond the Alps. |
