Description This talk is a continuation of our previous work on expletive negation, expanding the empirical scope from fear clauses alone to temporal clauses as well. Based on two different patterns of syncretism, we argue that it is a split phenomenon. However, rather than assuming we are dealing with apparent expletive markers and real ones, like in Tsiakmakis (2025), we propose that the distinction is related to epistemicity and irrealis/conditional.
