| Description | FILM-SHOT-COUNTER: A Database for Quantitative Analysis of Cinema is an original research database that compiles the author’s own quantitative measurements of films and television episodes for the purposes of stylistic, historical, and comparative film analysis. Since the version reported in 2019, the database has expanded substantially: it now contains more than 4,000 entries, which represents an almost twofold increase in the number of measured items. At the same time, its analytical scope has been broadened through the introduction of newly monitored parameters, most notably Cuts Per Minute (CPM) and Cuts Per Hour (CPH), alongside Average Shot Length (ASL) and total shot counts. The database is based on the author’s manual shot counting, Cinemetrics-based processing, and shot-by-shot analyses. Its particular value lies in its combination of historical depth and contemporary breadth, including extensive coverage of recent Hollywood production, a significant body of Central and Eastern European films, numerous rare silent films from the 1910s, and an almost complete corpus of preserved Czech silent cinema. The database provides a robust empirical foundation for research into editing rhythms, stylistic norms and deviations, and long-term changes in film style across periods, regions, genres, production contexts, and individual filmmakers. As a continuously expanding scholarly resource, it serves both specialized research and pedagogical use in the fields of film studies, film historiography, and quantitative stylistic analysis. |
