| Description | This study analyzes the variation in the grammatical gender of loanwords associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, based on the observation that their integration into recipient languages is not always stable or fully standardized by the norm. The paper focuses on the tension between normative descriptions, often based on dictionaries, and actual usage, which shows significant fluctuation in gender assignment. Drawing on data obtained through linguistic surveys, it aims to examine this phenomenon empirically and identify patterns of variation. The study also introduces a methodological proposal for calculating the degree of gender fluctuation, with the aim of contributing to a more precise and dynamic description of this grammatical category. The analysis builds on previous research on Portuguese and Spanish, allowing for comparison across different linguistic contexts. Its main objective is thus to provide a basis for a more sophisticated lexicographic approach capable of reflecting the actual variability of loanwords. |
