| Description | The focus of the article is the phenomenon of martyrdom and its perception by members of the Province of Bohemia of the Society of Jesus, especially confronting the views of different members with distinct experience and careers, such as missionaries in the East and West Indies (i.e. Spanish and Portuguese colonies overseas) and preachers who stayed in their home province. The article proves recognition of various types of martyrdom by Bohemian Jesuit preachers and missionaries, although an obvious contrast has been found between the official refutation of “white martyrdom” by Jesuit authorities and its general acknowledgement by preachers and missionaries. Furthermore, the article clarifies the historical discrepancy between the Jesuit attitude concerning the omnipresent will to suffer a venerable and heroic death for the sake of God and Christianity, often proclaimed by members of the Society of Jesus, and the situations actually experienced described predominantly by overseas missionaries in their personal correspondence. |
