| Description | This brief report discusses place names in Greenland, particularly their standardization, which is overseen by the Greenlandic Language Secretariat (Oqaasileriffik). When determining the official forms of place names, the Secretariat gives preference to dialectal variants and avoids names derived from personal names. It also mentions Czech traces in Greenland; in the 18th century, the island became the destination of a mission of non-Catholics from Herrnhut, where the Moravian Brethren established an Evangelical church after their flight from Moravia. In Greenland, they gradually founded three settlements named Neuherrnhut, Lichtenau, and Lichtenfels, which no longer exist today. |
