Description This paper examines how (linguistically) experimental literary texts can be used in German as a foreign language (DaF) classrooms to foster a creative and reflective approach to language. The focus lies on a didactic proposal based on the picture book Piepmatz macht Wald aus euch! by Michael Stavarič. The aim is to raise learners’ awareness of the author’s distinctive literary language, its multilingual character, and playful forms of linguistic expression. At the same time, they are encouraged to engage in their own creative writing processes, for instance by developing their own bird protagonists and their perspectives on environmental and nature-related issues. The analysis of the classroom implementation shows that the experimental and norm-deviating language of the text has a strong motivational effect and stimulates linguistic creativity. While learners tended to use predominantly conventional structures on the grammatical level, a productive appropriation and application of non-standard and onomatopoeic forms could be observed at the lexical level. The findings highlight the potential of contemporary picture books for promoting linguistic creativity in DaF teaching.
