| Description | Jiří Fukač (15. 1. 1936, Znojmo – 22. 11. 2002, Brno) was one of the most influential Czech musicol- ogists of the 20th century—a scholar of remarkable breadth, intellectual ambition, and organiza- tional impact. Trained in Brno and shaped by the traditions of Central European musicology, he combined historical research, aesthetics, semiotics, sociology, and pedagogy into a uniquely syn- thetic approach. His role in creating the Slovník české hudební kultury and initiating the long–term project of the Český hudební slovník positioned him as a foundational figure of Czech lexicography. Despite political restrictions during the normalization era, he produced an extraordinary body of studies and books, became a charismatic teacher and mentor to an entire generation of Czech and international scholars, and represented Czech musicology abroad with authority and vision. His work exemplifies a musicologist who not only interpreted musical culture but actively shaped its institutional, intellectual, and public life. The purpose of this comprehensive collective study is to describe and summarize Jiří Fukač’s contribution to Czech and international musicology and to present him both as a scholar and as a person. |
